Field gentian (Gentianella campestris) likes mildly acidic to neutral soils in pastures, on hill grassland, grassy heaths, sand dunes, machair and road verges.

The purple herb is mainly a plant of northern England and Scotland. Once thought to be quite common, the plant is now disappearing over a wide area, say botanists.
