In 2003 the council launched a competition to find a replacement for the King Alfred.

The winning consortium, headed up by Frank Gehry, wants to build 754 flats around the new leisure centre.

The tallest of the two towers will be 25 storeys.

If planning permission is granted, Gehry's project should be completed by 2012.
