Ask Albert - Number 103
Ask Albert
Match of the Day's footballing sage Albert Sewell is poised to answer your queries on the beautiful game.

Kevin, England

What are England's remaining international matches this season?

There are still three games to come: Thursday 22 May - a friendly against South Africa in Durban; Tuesday 3 June - another friendly against Serbia and Montenegro at Leicester; and on Wednesday 11 June there is a European Championship qualifier against Slovakia at Middlesbrough.

B Cameron, Scotland

My 5-a-side colleague got sent off recently for arguing with the referee over the length of time he spent taking a penalty. Have any professionals ever been sent off in such circumstances?

Plenty of players have been sent off for arguing about a penalty given against their team, and some have been booked for dissent afterwards. My refereeing guru wonders if your friend might have been sent off for something he said to the referee. Otherwise, he thinks, a yellow card should have sufficed.

Ed Balch, England

Am I right in thinking that goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel once scored for Manchester United? A friend of mine says he never did.

In his 20-season career, starting with Danish club Hvidore in 1983, Schmeichel has made more than 700 appearances, and scored one goal in English football. That was for Aston Villa, away to Everton, on 20 October 2001 - a last-minute volley in a 3-2 defeat.

Now 39, Peter has announced his retirement at the end of this season.

Steve, Surrey

My club Woking, in the Conference, have had a run of nine draws on the trot. What is the all-time record, I wonder?

The records show that the most consecutive drawn games played by a team in the Football League was eight by Torquay United in the Third Division from October to December 1969.

Chris Hales, England

Could you tell me what was the nickname of the great John Charles?

'Il Buon Gigante' or 'The Gentle Giant' was the name bestowed on John Charles during his last five years with Juventus (1957-62). Now aged 72, he is still revered in Italy and was treated like a king when he went back for the Juventus centenary celebrations a few years ago.

He was also a wonderful player for Leeds United and Wales (38 caps).

John, Poland

West Ham beat Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final in 1964. The week before, when they met in the league, United fielded a reserve team and won 2-0. Can you tell me who was in that side?

You are right. That was all but a reserve eleven they lined up: Gaskell in goal; Brennan and Dunne the full-backs; half-backs Crerand, Tranter and Stiles; and a forward line of Anderson, Chisnall, Sadler, Herd and Moir. The goals were scored by Herd and Sadler.

Gubby, Devon

Why is Glasgow Rangers manager Alex McLeish known as 'Big Eck'?

I'm told that he has had that nicknmae from when he was an Aberdeen and Scotland player (77 caps). He is over six feet tall, so he's 'big' enough and the 'Eck' derived from 'Alec' (real name Alexander). Put those two ingredients together and you've got 'Big Eck'.

Graham Mole, England

How many players have been sent off in matches against Arsenal this season?

11 players have been red-carded against Arsenal this season: Cisse (Birmingham), Benarbia (Man City), Campo (Bolton), Flitcroft (Blackburn), Davies (Tottenham), Lee (Farnborough), Wilkshire (Middlesbrough), Robert (Newcastle), Lomas (West Ham), Totti (Roma) and Laville (Bolton).

Gareth Roberts, Chester, UK

If a referee feels one of his assistants is having a poor game, can he change him and bring on the fourth official?

No, that would not be allowed. But a change could be made if, say, a linesman became unwell during the game.

Chris, England

How much did BSkyB pay for the present rights to cover the Premiership live?

BSkyB paid a total of 1.1b for live coverage of the Premiership (66 matches per season) for 2001/02, 2002/03 and 2003/04. TV bidding for the contract , starting in season 2004/05, takes place this summer.
