Ask Albert - Number 106
Ask Albert
Match of the Day's footballing sage Albert Sewell is poised to answer your queries on the beautiful game.

Jane, Twickenham

As Arsenal captain in the final, was David Seaman the first goalkeeper to lift the FA Cup?

There was one FA Cup winning captain in all the years the final was played at Wembley. That was Dave Beasant when Wimbledon beat Liverpool in 1988. As well as the skipper, he was the Dons' hero that day - he saved a John Aldridge penalty.

Peter Rodrigues, England

Which play-off position (third, fourth, fifth or sixth) in Division One has proved the most successful in winning promotion to the Premiership?

In the first 10 seasons of the Premiership, fifth place in Division One has been the most successful, leading to promotion four times. Third place triumphed three times, fourth place twice and sixth place once.

Wolves finished fifth this year, so is it an omen?

Freddie, London

Compared with the millions today's stars are paid, what wages were the players on just before and directly after the last war?

Through the '30s up to the outbreak of war in 1939, football had a maximum wage of 8 a week - 6 in the close season. They also had a bonus of 2 for a win and 1 for a draw. The maximum went up to 12 a week when league football resumed in 1946.

Chris, Derby

Any idea where Derby County's nickname, the Rams, comes from?

Derby have been known as the Rams ever since they became one of the Football League's founder members in 1888. The ram was the mascot of the Sherwood Foresters' Regiment, in which a lot of Derby men served, and the club decided to adopt it as their emblem.

Richard, England

Apart from Everton, which five clubs have currently spent most years in the top division?

Arsenal head the list. They have been in the top division since 1919, Everton since 1954, Liverpool since 1962, Manchester United since 1975 and Southampton and Tottenham since 1978.

Steve Richardson, England

Is it true that Newcastle and Aston Villa had an attendance of 101,117 for the FA Cup final at Crystal Palace in 1905?

That's correct Steve. Only one other match in England has attracted a bigger crowd - Wembley's first cup final in 1923.The official attendance was 126,047 but thousands broke into the ground, and it was estimated there were 150,000 in the stadium that day.

Another Des, Nottingham

Was Sheffield United's semi-final play-off winner by Nottingham Forest's Des Walker the most expensive own goal this season?

Maybe it did cost Forest a place in the play-off final. But Des has experienced an even unluckier own goal, also in extra time. His header was Tottenham's winner against Forest in the 1991 FA Cup final.

Thai, England

You seem to know a lot about the past and present. How old are you - 100?

I don't mind telling you. I'm as old as my nose and older than my teeth! My first football cuttings book starts with a picture of the England team in 1938.

John, England

When were substitutes first used in the FA Cup final?

They were first allowed in 1967 but none were used in that final (Tottenham v Chelsea). The first sub to play in the final was defender Dennis Clarke for WBA against Everton in 1968.

Mark, England

Which England international did Newcastle buy from Arsenal in 1988?

That will have been left-back Kenny Sansom who was signed by Jim Smith for Newcastle for 300,000 as a Christmas present for Geordie fans. The deal was completed on December 23.
