Photography captures candid moments on the Metro

An online photography exhibition has captured everyday life on the Tyne and Wear Metro.

Terminus, by Newcastle-based documentary photographer Sasha Mallo Tardiveau, chronicled the final two years that the original train fleet was running across the north-east of England.

Mallo Tardiveau spent many hours travelling on the system between 2024 and 2026 - as the new Metro trains replaced the old ones - meeting people and taking their pictures.

She said people were "at the heart of this project", adding the project was about "things that seem mundane, but when you see the photo of that moment, it tells a story".

The last original Metro train completed its final journey in June after 46 years in operation, following a project to replace the ageing fleet with 46 Stadler trains at a cost of £362m.

Mallo Tardiveau said: "My photos show life during the end of an era for our region.

"Metro has been a part of my life almost daily, and these last two years of work have been like capturing a chapter in our region's history."
