'Look at my husband' and 'Vlad plots revenge'

Prime Minister Andy Burnham tells the Times that economic growth is now the responsibility of No 10 North as part of a power shift away from Whitehall. In an interview the prime minister says the Treasury's role of controlling the public finances "sometimes clouds that growth mission". The Times describes Burnham likening No 10 North to Harold Wilson's Department of Economic Affairs, a dedicated ministry for growth launched in 1964 and reincorporated into the Treasury, three years later.

The prime minister marks his rough sleeping pledge with articles published in the Guardian, and the Daily Mirror. In the former, Burnham says he has "never accepted" homelessness as a fact of life, a philosophy which he argues "took hold" in Westminster in the 1980s. In the Mirror, he highlights the national response to homelessness during the pandemic, with "everyone all in it together". The i Paper says the vow to bring people off the streets by Christmas is a "major test" for the prime minister as it cautions that not all councils may welcome being asked to work towards this goal.

"Tragedy at the Seaside" is the headline for the Daily Mail, as it leads on the deaths of three members of the same family at Shoreham-by-Sea. Citing a witness, the paper says two adults jumped into the water to help the children, one of whom was later pulled from the sea by a fisherman, who then raised the alarm.

The Financial Times leads on long-term borrowing costs reaching multi-decade highs yesterday, in the US, Europe and Japan. The bond market is said to be "nervous" because of fiscal deficits "with no obvious levers for improvement" in countries where growth is "sub-par" and inflation "sticky".

Several papers highlight Queen Camilla's comments about having to keep the King's cancer a secret. She's pictured on the front pages of the Daily Express and the Daily Mirror. The Daily Telegraph says that with "unprecedented candour" the Queen has revealed her husband's determination to keep working, after he was first diagnosed. The Sun's leader column praises the couple for showing "unyielding courage" in the way they've faced cancer "with dignity and honesty".
