Police treat attack on man stabbed multiple times as attempted murder

A man in his 30s has been stabbed multiple times in what the police are treating as attempted murder.

Detectives believe two men were involved in the attack in the greater Shantallow area of Londonderry on Tuesday night.

The alert was raised shortly before 23:40 GMT after the victim flagged down a passing motorist on the Skeoge Link Road, who then called for help.

The seriously injured man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Altnagelvin hospital.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) are trying to establish the circumstances of the attack, including exactly where it happened.

Several potential crime scenes are in place on Wednesday in Steelstown Village, Racecourse Road and Cornshell Fields.

Police want to hear from anyone who may have information about the attack.

They particularly want to speak to anyone who was in the Earhart Park/Cornshell Fields areas at around 22:30 GMT who may have information about the assault.

Det Insp Lizzie Ballentine said: "This was a serious incident, a vicious assault, which has left a man seriously injured.

"I want to thank everyone who has, to date, helped with our enquiries, and encourage anyone who has information – no matter how insignificant it might seem to them – to please report it.

"It may prove crucial to our investigation."
