Emergency plan for island due soon, group says

BBC A large tree has been up-ended in a park, and lies across a wide tarmac walkway. Its branches have hit the ground on the other side of the path, and its roots and stump are out of the ground where it previously stood, lifting up some of the grass and turf. Practical advice will soon be available to help islanders be more prepared for emergency disruptions, according to a multi-agency group.

The Jersey Resilience Forum said the Jersey Risk Register and Household Emergency Plan would contain advice on steps residents could take to prepare for events such as severe weather and power cuts.

Last week the UK launched its "Be Ready" campaign which encourages households to stock up on tinned food and bottled water to be prepared for emergencies.

A spokesperson for the forum said the plan for the island would be "developed specifically for Jersey" and "designed to help people feel informed and confident, not alarmed".

The Jersey Resilience Forum is a multi-agency group which was created to plan emergency preparation, response and recovery.

"While the UK campaign contains useful advice, we think it is important that islanders have guidance tailored to Jersey's own circumstances," the spokesperson said.

It comes after winds of 84mph (135km/h) were recorded at the airport during Storm Austen on Friday.

The Infrastructure and Environment Department reported more than 90 incidents involving trees, 13 involving water, five involving debris, one damaged building and one involving damage to infrastructure.

Wind speeds of 95mph (154km/h) were recorded in Jersey when Storm Goretti hit the island in January.

At that time clean-up teams dealt with a reported 86 fallen trees and about 300 homes were left without power.
