'Frightening' spiking claims investigated by uni

A university has launched an investigation into claims members of a rugby club planned to spike female students during freshers' week.

The University of Bath said it has increased security in nightclubs in response to "frightening" rumours circulating on social media which associate the university rugby club with "disturbing and unacceptable behaviour towards female students."

In a joint statement, the University of Bath Rugby Club and students' union (SU) said: "We have not organised, promoted, or attempted to arrange any activity of this nature."

A spokesperson from the university said it is beginning a wider review of the culture around its sports clubs.

In a statement on Tuesday, the university said it has commissioned an independent investigation into the claims to "establish the facts."

"If evidence of wrongdoing is found, we will ensure our student disciplinary measures are implemented robustly," it added.

Spiking is the criminal offence of giving someone alcohol or drugs without their knowledge or consent.

Avon and Somerset Police has been approached for comment.

The university said over the next two weeks campus stalls will discuss the expectations it has around preventing harassment, bullying, sexual misconduct and discrimination.

"We appreciate this situation has been frightening for many students, particularly women who are now concerned about their own safety when going out in Bath."

It said it was also concerned about reports of abuse directed at student sports club members.

"All students have the right to feel safe on the university campus and within the community," it added.

The University of Bath Rugby club and SU said it "does not condone, encourage, or accept targeting, coercion, harassment, intimidation, or any behaviour that puts others at risk."

"The University of Bath Rugby Club is committed to promoting a culture of respect, accountability, and inclusion," a spokesperson added.
