There are major delays on the M65 eastbound after a lorry fire and "significant spillage" forced part of the motorway to close.

The emergency services were called to a report of the HGV being alight at about 05:15 BST.

The fire has been put out but the eastbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for some time, between Whitebirk in Blackburn at junction 6 and Accrington at junction 7 in Lancashire.

The vehicle is being recovered and damage to the carriageway is being assessed.

The closure is required to provide a safe working area for emergency services and protect road users while the vehicle is made safe, National Highways said.

There is currently no confirmed reopening time.

Police have asked for people to avoid the area, plan a different route and allow extra journey time.
