Guernsey's summer warmest ever recorded

This summer has been the warmest on record, Guernsey Met Office has confirmed.

Meteorologists said June, July and August were all the warmest summer months recorded in the island since records began in 1843, with an average temperature of 18.9C (66.2F), significantly higher than the average for these months of 16.2C (61.2F).

Guernsey Met said the hottest day of the summer came on 25 June, when the temperature hit 36.4C (97.5F).

It said the previous warmest summer was in 2022 when temperatures averaged 18.0C (64.4F).

Guernsey Met said temperatures of 30C or more were recorded on six separate days.

It also said the total amount of sunshine was 888.7 hours which was considerably higher than the 30-year average of 726 hours.

Regional meteorologists had said the data was in line with evidence that climate change was driving hotter summers and increasing the likelihood of drier conditions.

The data also showed the island experienced significantly lower than average rainfall across the three month period.

It said there was a total of 74.5mm (2.9inches) of rainfall compared to the average of 147.6mm (5.8inches).
