City could get more than 1,000 EV charging points

More than 1,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points could be installed across Peterborough under plans being considered this week.

Members of the city council's cabinet will be asked to accept about £1m in funding from the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority to support the expansion of the city's charging network.

The cabinet will also be asked to approve awarding a long-term contract to Believ Limited for the installation and maintenance of 1,058 on-street charge points.

A report to Thursday's meeting said the scheme represented a significant opportunity to accelerate Peterborough's transition to cleaner transport while improving access to charging facilities.

The council said much of Peterborough's existing EV charging infrastructure was concentrated at destination charging sites such as workplaces, supermarkets and retail parks.

It added that residents without driveways or private parking currently had fewer charging options, which could be less convenient for day-to-day use.

If approved, Believ would install the charge points over the next four years.

The cabinet meeting is due to take place at the council's offices in Fletton Quays on Thursday at 14:00 BST.
