A scam warning has been issued by Derbyshire Police after a number of residents received phone calls from fraudsters pretending to be officers.

Police said calls had been made on Monday afternoon using a "number spoofing" technique where the number being displayed is changed.

The calls - which showed to residents as coming from a number starting 01773 and ending in 215 - claimed to be from police officers to attempt to gain personal details including financial information by saying details had been recovered during an investigation.

So many scam calls were being made that the force asked people to report online as the numbers were "causing unusually high wait times" on its own phone lines.

A police warning said: "Our officers will never call you and ask for any financial details such as bank account numbers, PINs, or cryptocurrency information."

"Anyone who receives such a call should hang up," it added. "Do not share any information over the phone."
