Train delays as track faults spark safety fears

An emergency train timetable has been imposed in south Essex after faults were found on the railway track.

Services between Wickford and Southminster are running at a 30mph (48km/h) speed restriction due to the issue.

Greater Anglia said the faults were found during a safety inspection of the track earlier.

The line has been under intense scrutiny after a train carrying 62 passengers derailed near Wickford on 14 August.

Investigators believe the incident was caused by a "misalignment" or "kink" in the track and are due to release a full report at a later date.

Passengers have been warned of delays while Wednesday's speed restriction is in place.

Services will depart from Wickford to Southminster at 15 minutes past the hour, while trains from the other direction will leave at five past.

"This should allow a more reliable service to operate on the line," Greater Anglia said.
