A man in his 40s has been arrested after being injured in a shooting involving armed police.

Avon and Somerset Police responded to reports of a suspected firearm at an address on Fishponds Road in Bristol on Thursday.

Police said firearms were discharged before their negotiators arrived, leaving a man with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man remains in hospital under police guard and has now been arrested on suspicion of affray and of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

A cordon remains in place at an address in Fishponds Road, as forensic searches continue.

The force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the incident, which it has to do when a member of the public is injured during contact with the police.

Supt Matt Ebbs said: "The role of our firearms officers is incredibly challenging, and they are rigorously trained, tested and held to the highest standards.

"They are deployed when a significant risk to the public or to officers' safety has been identified.

"This type of incident, while very rare, is distressing."
