The lights on the ground floor of Workington Library will be replaced

A town's library has closed for a week to install new lighting after its failing fixtures made it hard to see inside.

Workington Library will be temporarily shut until Monday 12 October while work is done on the ground floor of the building.

Cumberland Council said the lights had reached the end of their operational life, adding: "Over recent months, failing fixtures have become irreparable and obsolete with replacement parts no longer available, affecting visibility in this area."

A spokesperson said the essential works would help create a "brighter, more welcoming environment for customers and staff and form part of ongoing investment in the library building".

The Labour-led local authority said emails and telephone calls would continue to be monitored and people could still access library services through its other locations including Seaton and Distington.

The cafe at the library on Vulcan's Lane has also been closed since 28 September during the work.

The council apologised for the inconvenience, adding customers could continue to access a range of library services online, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, newspapers and magazines.
