A person was rescued from the sea off Blackpool's South Promenade after getting into difficulty near the Sandcastle.

Blackpool RNLI volunteers launched their lifeboat in rough conditions with "crashing waves" at about 13:50 BST on Thursday.

The casualty was pulled from the water as they were being swept towards South Pier before being taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

RNLI volunteer launch authority Rick said there was "no doubt" that the volunteers' "courageous quick actions saved the person's life".

"The crew were faced with challenging conditions in getting to and from the scene, and in effecting the rescue," he said.

It was the first rescue by volunteer Jack, since he qualified to lifeboat crew from shore crew, the RNLI added.
