'Keep windows closed' warning as crews tackle fire

People living near a fire which has been tackled by crews in North Yorkshire overnight have been advised to keep doors and windows closed as work to put it out continues.

Crews were called to reports of wood waste on fire on Heck and Pollington Lane, near Great Heck, at 23:41 BST on Tuesday.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) said a fire of about 323 sq ft (30 sq m) was being fought by crews from across the county, including appliances from Selby, Harrogate, Thirsk and Richmond. Crews from Humberside and South Yorkshire also attended.

The fire was in a pile of wood waste approx 30m by 200m and the fire service said it was expected they would be at the scene through the morning.

A spokesperson for NYFRS said: "It is advised that residents north of Heck in the direction of Selby are advised to keep doors and windows closed whilst this incident is still ongoing."
