A total of five people have applied for asylum in the island during the past five years and all were refused, the home affairs minister has said.

Senator Helen Miles said the asylum claims had been processed by the Jersey Customs and Immigration Service.

Responding to a question about immigration from deputy Montfort Tadier, Miles said all five claimants had been returned to "a safe third country".

The island's immigration law states people claiming asylum have a screening interview, have no recourse to public funds and are not permitted to undertake employment while their claim is considered.

Where a claim is determined to be inadmissible, the individual will normally be refused entry and returned to the safe country from which they travelled to Jersey, the law states.
