Police have appealed for information after a woman reported being sexually assaulted in York city centre.

The woman was attacked at about 19:00 BST on Wednesday, according to North Yorkshire Police.

Officers said they were looking for a man wearing a pink T-shirt with a black circular logo on the front, who was seen in the city centre and is believed to have information.

Senior Investigating Officer Matt Wilkinson said the victim was being supported by specially trained officers.

"We understand that an incident of this nature will understandably cause concern within the local community," he said.

"I want to reassure people that we are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened."

A cordon was put in place outside Fenwick department store in St Mary's Square on Wednesday, but the victim later told police she was unable to recall the exact location of the assault, the force said.
