Repair scheme set to start on ring road route

Repairs to Leeds Inner Ring Road's retaining walls are set to begin as part of a long-term scheme to maintain one of the city's busiest routes.

Leeds City Council said overnight work would take place between Woodhouse Tunnel and Woodhouse Lane from Tuesday and was expected to last about 15 weeks.

The local authority said the project was the first phase of a wider structural maintenance programme, with work carried out between 19:00 and 05:00 BST.

Councillor Peter Carlill, the authority's executive member for transport and planning, said: "Many of the structures supporting the route were built decades ago and now require investment to ensure they remain safe and reliable for the future."

More than 90,000 vehicles use Leeds Inner Ring Road each day, according to the council, with temporary traffic management measures set to include lane and road closures.

Carlill said the route played "a vital role" in helping traffic move around Leeds, with the work intended to reduce the risk of larger problems developing in future.

Further phases, subject to funding approval, were planned in coming years, the council said, with the next stage expected to begin in early 2027.

Motorists have been advised to allow extra time for journeys while the work is taking place, with signed diversion routes put in place where necessary.
