Will Posh fans welcome Robbie Savage as boss?

Peterborough United fans are undecided as to whether prospective manager Robbie Savage is the right person for the job.

Savage's current National League club Forest Green Rovers said on Tuesday the former Wales international had been offered the job, which the League One side has not yet confirmed.

Posh fan Stuart Killingray said a "celebrity" signing felt like "an odd choice" at first, but that his experience as a player could be useful.

"He might know useful people that could help the club," he added.

"It will be a mixed bag I think. Hope springs eternal."

Peterborough sacked previous boss Luke Williams on 19 September after a poor start to the season.

Posh are currently second from bottom in the League One table with just one win in their first eight league games of the season.

Fellow supporter Henry Currie said Savage would not be his first choice, describing it as "a bit of an optimistic gamble".

"Does he come from a footballing background and is he a well-known name? Yes," he said.

"But sometimes coming with a well-known name does bring a lot of pressure. Going from National League to League One is a very big step up."

Currie said he was unsure whether Savage was the right man to lead Posh's squad, which included many players who had been signed from non-league teams.

"Do we need to take them [former non-league players] out of the limelight, get a bit of experience in, get a bit of backbone behind the club, and then pick up from there and then maybe in a couple of years' time take the punt again?

"But for now, the main thing is solidifying ourselves and keeping our status as a League One team."

He said he would have preferred to see the return of former Posh boss Steve Evans, or another experienced manager who had recently left a Championship side.

Posh supporter Mark Clifton said he enjoyed watching Savage as a player.

"Peterborough United need a change, and he's definitely going to bring a change to them I think," he said.

He said he expected there to be clashes between Savage and the club's chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

"If they can iron that out, I think it could work potentially," Clifton added.

The 51-year-old was capped 39 times by Wales and was appointed by Forest Green in July 2025, having previously managed non-league Macclesfield.

Having started out in Manchester United's youth team, alongside David Beckham and Paul Scholes, he was released by the club at 19.

He went on to play as a midfielder for clubs including Derby County, Birmingham City, Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers.

He guided his current side to seventh in the table last season, but they were beaten in the play-off eliminators.

Savage joined the presenting team on BBC Radio 5 Live's 606 football phone-in programme in 2010 and was a contestant on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing the following year.

Forest Green chairman Dale Vince said the club had given Savage permission to speak to Peterborough.

"He wanted to leave the club for personal reasons, reasons which we understand and respect," he said.

"He's been offered the job and we're now in a negotiation with Peterborough on the terms. We wish Robbie the very best."
