Sinfield visits Leeds Rhinos during epic challenge

Sir Kevin Sinfield has visited his former Leeds Rhinos home during the latest leg of his endurance challenge to raise money for motor neurone disease (MND) causes.

The club legend is aiming to complete seven ultramarathons in seven days, inspired by his friend and teammate Rob Burrow, who died in 2024 after living with the disease for more than four years.

Sinfield kicked off the fourth stage at the DIY Kitchens Stadium in Wakefield on Wednesday morning, visited Headingley in Leeds, Odsal Stadium in Bradford and finished at the Accu Stadium in Huddersfield at about 16:00.

The fundraiser and his team have raised more than £11m for the MND community since his first annual challenge in 2020.

Sinfield is running between Hull and Manchester as part of his 7 in 7: The Grand Finale challenge.

He will visit all 12 Super League clubs along the way before arriving at the Grand Final on Saturday.

Sinfield has been surprised by royals along his journey so far, with The Prince and Princess of Wales greeting him on Tuesday and the Princess Royal on Monday.

Famous names from the sporting world have also joined him along the route, including former England football manager Sir Gareth Southgate and Leeds boxer Josh Warrington.

On Wednesday's leg, pundit and former footballer Micah Richards joined Sinfield by cycling part of the route.

"Those guys are superhumans," he said.

"To see what he is doing for his mate, words can't describe it."

Members of the MND community also joined Sinfield on Wednesday, with Eric Frank diagnosed with the degenerative condition more than a decade ago.

"It will be 11 years in July, and unfortunately he lost all his abilities very early on - he has not been able to talk or walk or move for at least 10 years," daughter Michaela said.

His involvement in the day made the family feel like he "hadn't been forgotten".

"It's a very solitary world when our doors close of an evening, so when we get the opportunity to come out and make him see it's OK we take them."

Though her father cannot communicate, he "100% knows he's here" and he "misses nothing", she added.

During the challenge, each ultra marathon is split into 7km blocks which must be completed within the hour before beginning the next.

Funds raised by the challenge will go towards the work of the MND Association, Leeds Hospitals Charity, My Name5 Doddie Foundation, Darby Rimmer Foundation, MND Scotland and the Irish MND Association.
