School looks set for drama and sport facility boost

A Surrey school is poised to receive permission to build an extension for new drama and sports facilities on its campus.

Planning officers are recommending councillors approve the revamp of St Peter's Catholic School in Guildford later this week.

The scheme would see the school's St Cecilia's building get a two-storey extension for new PE facilities, plus changing rooms, a drama studio and a hospitality suite.

Residents have been split on the proposals, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), with 98 letters of support and 84 objections.

Planning documents submitted by the secondary school and sixth form say the proposal will improve "inadequate existing outdoor sporting facilities".

A new all-weather sports pitch would be installed, while a netball court would be relocated to reconfigure parking arrangements.

Many residents opposed the scheme over the potential impact on traffic and noise.

But other members of the community supported the plans as they said they would boost the school's facilities and allow more children to take part in sports.

Officers are recommending councillors approve the scheme when they meet for Guildford Borough Council's planning committee on Thursday.
